Educational and Practical Importance
ICAS Writing provides an objective ranking of students’ performance based on relevant curricula. Skills like thoughtful planning, creativity, and critical thinking are not only keys to success in English but are essential for effective communication in all areas of life.
Skills Tested (Years 4 to 12)
Assessments cover narrative or persuasive writing. Persuasive tasks include essays, letters,
and opinion pieces, while narrative tasks focus on setting, character, and plot development.
Marking and Assessment
Writing is marked on a common, criterion-referenced scale, making scores comparable across year levels. This allows schools to make direct comparisons that inform teaching strategies and programs.
Marking Criteria Domains
Assessments are marked against specific criteria including Genre (structure and style), Textual Grammar (tense and connectives), and Syntax/Punctuation (prepositions and articles).
