In an effort to deepen their understanding of sustainable fashion practices, students from UIC College of Fashion recently embarked on an enlightening journey to Kana Goods, a local fashion brand committed to eco-friendly principles. Guided by Mrs. Batik Eco Sancaya Rini , the Founder of Kana Goods, students were immersed in a realm where fashion intertwines with sustainability, further emphasizing UIC College's dedication to shaping the future of fashion.
Throughout the visit, fashion students were introduced to the nuances of fabric dyeing techniques by Sancaya Rini herself. With an emphasis on utilizing natural materials for colouring, students learned about traditional methods such as wax covering alongside contemporary techniques like tie-dyeing. This focus on sustainability resonated deeply with UIC College's ethos of promoting ethical and eco-conscious practices within the fashion industry.
The highlight of the visit was a hands-on workshop where students actively engaged in colouring fabrics using the tie-dye technique. Armed with basic tools and natural dyes like indigo and coffee grounds, students unleashed their creativity to produce unique patterns on fabrics. Not only did they learn to use indigo dye, but UIC College of Fashion students also experimented with dye made from coffee grounds sourced from .TEMU Cafe for their final projects in the February 2024 term. Throughout the process, students learned how to achieve desired colors using the coffee grounds. This immersive experience not only showcased Kana Goods' dedication to sustainability but also underscored UIC College's commitment to fostering innovation and creativity among its students.
As students delved into the dynamic realm of sustainable fashion, the visit to Kana Goods served as a testament to UIC College's mission of nurturing the next generation of fashion leaders. Through experiential learning opportunities like this, UIC College continues to empower students to make a positive impact in the fashion industry, championing the principles of sustainability and responsible fashion practices.
